I use 3 and two (whole feather on each side opposite each other) and 3 is not necessairly more stable. Anything will do but the longer and higher the fletch will fly slower.I have two 3 fletched darts...

Personally, I'm lazy. I use the one-feather Catawba style. Just trim the top and bottom of a good turkey feather and wrap it on. If your dart is balanced right (heavier in the front), this works well....

If I remember right, to use a dart without fletching the balance point should be 25% to 30% from the tip. Is that about what yours works out to?

I am not sure how the 3 fletch came about. I personally feel that early man had the fletching thing down pretty well before the advent of the bow and arrow. I also think that he used different darts...
